Pulp Fiction is about, well, pulp fiction. My favorite pulp fiction authors are probably J.R.R. Author: Published: Review: 4.93 (986 vote) Summary: Pulp Fiction tattoo My pulp fiction tattoo. (Without it, would YouTubers be hyper-analyzing Christopher Nolan movies today? In short, no.) While a whole book could be devoted just to its visual Easter eggs, here’s a smattering of things you may have missed in Tarantino’s seminal film to catch on a rewatch. This pulp fiction tattoo is a tribute to the pulp fiction authors who inspired me through the years. And in that subgenre, there still hasn’t been anything quite as big, daring, weird, demented, and frankly kinky as Pulp Fiction-a ridiculously entertaining meta-movie overstuffed with references and narrative cul-de-sacs. Pulp Fiction announced a sea change in Hollywood, when Gen X upstarts could channel their personal and artistic idiosyncrasies into ambitious, commercially successful projects that just about everyone talked about. Things obviously got more complicated when I connected four devices at once to a single Mac, yet even after some initial hiccups due to orientation adjustments, even those four devices managed to run decently on my Mac’s display. There are always some artifacts (in terms of sharpness and color reproduction) when iOS is mirrored to a Mac (as a reminder, something that Apple isn’t officially supporting) and I experienced some slowdowns on my less-than-perfect wireless home network yet in spite of my network’s flaws, both AirServer and Reflection allowed me to play Ski Safari and Temple Run side-by-side without any noticeable lags that negatively impacted the experience. ![]() In mirroring two, three, and four devices at once to my Macs, I found AirServer and Reflection to be comparable in terms of performances and image quality. This is especially nice for apps that send data alongside the AirPlay stream, such as Rdio for iOS, which sends an artist’s information and cover art alongside audio. For instance, while Reflection will play your iOS audio on the Mac, AirServer will do the same, but it will also highlight the menubar icon to show that audio is being sent, and it will try to display a Growl notification. While Reflection is capable of turning your Mac into an AirPlay audio receiver (without any video) in spite of the app’s main focus on Mirroring, AirServer is clearly a more complete solution for all kinds of AirPlay streams with dedicated features for audio, video, and Mirroring. While Reflection and AirServer have become very similar utilities, in my tests I have found some important differences that are worth keeping in mind if you plan on using AirPlay Mirroring for more than just demoes to your friends and family members. The photo above, for instance, shows an iPhone 4S and three iPads being mirrored at the same time to OS X Lion with AirServer. At the same time, I figured I hadn’t used Reflection much since it came out two months ago I installed both the latest AirServer and Reflection on my iMac and MacBook Air, and tested multiple iOS devices with AirPlay Mirroring enabled at the same time.īoth AirServer and Reflection now allow you to mirror an iOS device’s screen on your Mac, and both apps let you mirror multiple devices at once with separate channels for audio and video. Recently, the AirServer team made some major changes to the way AirServer handles AirPlay Mirroring (our overview) on OS X with multiple iOS devices, so I thought it’d be appropriate to give the app a second try. ![]() From games enhanced with AirPlay to enable new controls and interactions, to several desktop utilities that are now connecting Macs and Apple TVs with AirPlay, there’s plenty of options out there to beam images and audio to devices running iOS or OS X.ĪirServer was one of the first applications to bring proper AirPlay support to the Mac, initially only with audio and video, then iOS 5 and Lion, and, around the time Reflection also came out, AirPlay Mirroring. The past few months have indeed seen a surge of AirPlay-compatible desktop utilities and apps that take advantage of Apple’s technology for audio and video streaming. From tools to turn Macs into AirPlay receivers for audio, video, iOS Mirroring sessions, then a combination of all them, to more or less Apple-approved “AirPlay audio receivers” sold in the App Store, then pulled, then released in Cydia, the past two years have surely been interesting for AirPlay. In my review of AirFoil Speakers Touch 3.0, I wrote about AirPlay:Įver since developers started reverse-engineering the AirPlay protocol that Apple introduced with iOS 4.2 in November 2010, we have seen all kinds of possible implementations of Apple’s streaming technology being ported to a variety of devices, for multiple purposes and scenarios. ![]() I do not know a single person that plays it, but it's still getting regular updates. Ghost Recon Frontline (cancelled): Another battle royale. In the face of a dwindling player count, the devs pivoted to team deathmatch. ![]() Released one year after Apex Legends and (even more unfortunately) a few months after Call of Duty: Warzone. Ghost Recon Breakpoint (2019): Ubisoft wanted Ghost Recon to be as replayble and grindy as The Division, resulting in a sloppy marriage of tactical shooter and bullet-spongey RPG.Skull and Bones (2023): The boat game of many delays that, I think, is sorta like Destiny but with Assassin's Creed naval combat. The modern setting and Clancy aesthetic also made for really boring loot (yipee, another sweatshirt and an ultra rare AK-47). Fun, but too simple to keep Destiny fans busy. The Division 2 (2019): Destiny, but Tom Clancy. ![]() The last six years of Ubisoft's live service game attempts read like a case study in too little, too late: In the service game game, you have to already be better than the other guys on day one, or risk getting written off by players who are just as happy sticking with a similar game that came out five years ago. It's no longer good enough to put out a mildly successful big-budget game. Now, that strength is becoming a weakness. Ubisoft didn't develop Siege with the goal of making the next Fortnite or Rocket League. I can't think of another big publisher that'd greenlight a competitive roller derby game, or a pirate RPG, or try to singlehandedly revive the extreme sports videogame craze of the early '00s. I've always appreciated this about Ubi, because say what you will about its recent output, at least it's taking risks. Ubisoft's vast network of worldwide studios allows it the flexibility to cast a wide net and see what snags. (Image credit: Ubisoft) Why Ubisoft games keep failing By late 2017, Siege had gone from a launch flop to a celebrated, if still pretty buggy, comeback story. Over the next year, Ubisoft followed through on its planned seasonal "Operation" updates, squashing bugs and delivering new operators, guns, and maps at a comfortable pace. To multiplayer FPS fans, it was a buggy, sloppily-monetized mess. To longtime Rainbow Six fans, Siege was an affront to a beloved series that'd always been singleplayer first. Siege is known today for excellent gunplay and impressive destruction tech, but back when it launched in 2015, fans and critics declared that the 5v5 tactical shooter was fated to fail. The one game that's done consistently well for Ubisoft is Rainbow Six Siege, an unexpected hit FPS from a long-dormant series. ![]() Not only did it have the resources and diverse teams to chase emerging trends like battle royale, looter shooters, and hero games, it already had a foot in the door. When our hobby zigzagged away from isolated, one-and-done experiences and started betting big on live service games, Ubisoft followed along with every major game maker. Ubisoft did what it was supposed to do on paper. It’s happened to all of us at least once: you get a green light only to find yourself stuck in the intersection thanks to a traffic jam ahead. The rulebook forbids use of high beams less than 200 metres from an oncoming vehicle and applies whether you’re driving down the highway at three in the morning or on a suburban road at lunchtime. If you pass a speed camera and feel like doing other motorists a favour with a cheeky flash of your high beams, you’ve technically committed an infringement. Flashing high beams around a speed camera It might seem harsh, but you’ll be thankful next time one of your disgruntled neighbours leans on the horn outside your bedroom window.Ĥ. But slamming on the horn in a bout of road rage? Not so much. Warning other drivers of your position or that you’re approaching, alerting animals in danger of being hit and setting it off as part of an anti-theft system are all fair game. We know what you’re thinking, but just like your hazard lights there are rules on what justifies using your horn. Even if your use of hazards is justified, it’s not a free pass to park where you want. Using your hazards is only permitted for specific purposes, including if you are blocking other vehicles or pedestrians, stopped in an emergency lane or driving in bad weather. The belief that you are allowed to park illegally as long as you turn on your hazard lights has evolved from tongue-in-cheek to a genuine misunderstanding. Using your hazard lights as a parking permit When you see a yellow traffic light, you must come to a stop as long as it is safe to do so – this means you are only permitted to drive through if there’s not enough time or distance to stop.Ģ. A yellow light is a signal to stop, not a licence to punch it and dash through the traffic lights before it turns red. 5 Common traffic offences you don’t know you are committingīelieve it or not, that’s not a typo. From the start, however, the project has faced multiple barriers hindering its completion, and the estimated cost of the HRTP increased at least twofold by 2017. The construction of the HRTP was initially scheduled to commence in 2009 with a preliminary budget projection of US $4 billion (Slowey 2018). Although public discussions regarding the opening of a public transit line in Honolulu have been ongoing since the second half of the previous century, funding was first approved in 2005. Looking at how the City, now under Carlisle’s watch, maintains its roads and buses might paint a picture as to how well Honolulu will manage the coming rail system. The Honolulu Rail Transit Project (HRTP) is an elevated 20-mile-long rail system with a total of 21 stations, connecting East Kapolei and Ala Moana Center along the shoreline of Oahu. The City is scheduled to award two more major contracts this year for the second phase of the rail route from Pearl City to Aloha Stadium and for the “core systems,” which consists of the train vehicles and the control center for the rail system. ![]() A second contract for the train storage and maintenance facility in Waipahu is expected to be executed shortly. The City has already awarded a construction contract for the first phase of the elevated rail guideway from East Kapolei to Pearl City. The FTA’s approval follows Governor Neil Abercrombie’s acceptance of the State’s Final Environmental Impact Statement in December. TheRail is an exact copy of TheBoat, only the M is a B, as in a billion dollars this time.” It was a sure way to flush $6 million in two years with nothing to show for it and they did exactly that. The cost per ride was $34 and the fare was $2. We said this with TheBoat, which was a major mass transit failure of the Hannemann and Kirk Caldwell administration. “The Federal Transit Administration clearly says that mass transit hardly ever dents congestion. “We cannot solve a traffic problem with a transit solution,” Prevedouros told The Hawaii Independent in August. One of Honolulu rail’s most outspoken critics has been former mayoral candidate Panos Prevedouros. Critics doubt the City’s claims that it had considered other alternatives in relieving traffic and question the City’s ability to afford such an undertaking. Opponents also criticized the public hearing process that helped the rail transit receive FTA approval. There will also be stations at activity centers such as UH-West Oahu, Leeward Community College, Pearl Highlands, Pearlridge, Aloha Stadium, Honolulu International Airport and Honolulu Community College. It includes 21 stations in communities including Waipahu, Pearl City, Aiea, Kalihi, Chinatown, Downtown Honolulu, and Kakaako. The $5.5 billion transit project is a 20-mile elevated rail system connecting East Kapolei with Ala Moana Center. Honolulu’s rail opponents don’t think enough people will opt out of driving their cars to jump onto a train that doesn’t yet go where everyone wants it to go. Rogoff said maintaining a functioning rail system will depend on effective planning and the ability to keep riders riding for generations. And 29 percent of all transit assets-rail, bus, and paratransit are in “poor or marginal condition.” ![]() But it turns out you can entice even diehard rail riders onto a bus, if you call it a ‘special’ bus and just paint it a different color than the rest of the fleet.”Ī recent federal study found that more than 6,000 of the nation’s almost 72,000 buses are in need of replacement, having exceeded their useful life. “Yes, transit riders often want to go by rail. One is this: Paint is cheap, rails systems are extremely expensive,” Rogoff said. “Supporters of public transit must be willing to share some simple truths that folks don’t want to hear. “With the completion of the National Environmental Policy Act process, the City of Honolulu has met all of the laws and regulations of the environmental review,” Rogoff said in a statement.Īt a national summit on the future of transit last May, Rogoff talked about the challenges facing the transit industry nationwide. On Tuesday, FTA Administrator Peter Rogoff presented the Record of Decision to Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle and Toru Hamayasu, general manager for the City’s Rapid Transit Division, at FTA offices in Washington, D.C. However, questions still linger as to how construction will affect the lives of those currently living on Oahu and whether the City can afford the hefty price tag. The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) issued a Record of Decision for Honolulu Rail Transit, confirming that the project has met all the requirements of the environmental review process. HONOLULU-The Honolulu Rail Transit Project passed a major hurdle yesterday. |
